I'll never forget when a grant funder told me my proposal was "too real."

I was asking for programmatic funding to help domestic violence survivors rebuild their lives, and apparently, leading with the human impact instead of the metrics was unprofessional. As I was sitting across the table from someone who couldn't see past the spreadsheet to the actual people, that moment taught me everything I needed to know about what's broken in philanthropy.

It also taught me what I wanted to fix and how to be vulnerable enough to actually make change.
